Marcuccilli Makes Time

Records fastest lap in Sportsman time trials

by Brendon Capria

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Oct. 7, 2016 – David Marcuccilli was surprised Friday when he recorded the fast time in time trials during the 45th running of the NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week at Oswego Speedway. The last time the Cayuga, N.Y. driver raced at the 5/8-mile, it was paved. But for him, the dirt racing experience is unparalleled.

“The [Sportsman cars] weren’t any fun on asphalt,” Marcuccilli said. “The dirt will be fun. The [track] did a very good job for the time they had. It was a little tricky but we had a good car.”

Marcuccilli was the first driver to enter the track for time trials. With 75 Sportsman cars on deck, Marcuccilli was one of three to record a lap time under 24 seconds. Setting the bar too high for the rest of the field, Marcuccilli’s No. M1 Page Trucking Bicknell car passed the checkers at 23.451.

The next closest was Ballston Spa, N.Y. driver Tyler Meeks, who trailed Marcuccilli by a 0.455 split. Meeks thanked the track for their hard work and said the conditions are getting better.

“We usually run on a slicker track here at Canandaigua [Speedway], so we ran that setup and everything worked out pretty good,” Meeks said. “I started spinning my tires coming off, so I screwed up my first lap. But we calmed down on the second lap. This is a track where you don’t need horsepower. It’s all handling and driving. Feather throttled it and it turned out well.”

The Sportsman class will conclude Friday’s program with a series 15-lap qualifiers. Where each driver finishes will determine who advances to Sunday’s Sportsman Chevy Performance Championship.
