Fans & Competitors Open Fairgrounds for Super DIRT Week XL
Move-in day transforms Syracuse’s ‘Moody Mile’ into a massive Race City
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Oct. 5, 2011 – Campers rolled in. Race haulers found their pit stalls. Souvenir trailers opened for business. The Wednesday transformation of the New York State Fairgrounds into the home for the 40th Anniversary of Super DIRT Week is complete and ready for racing Thursday through Sunday.
Fans from 23 states, three Canadian provinces, Australia and Great Britain are descending upon Syracuse for the biggest annual Modified event in the country. Beginning at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning, campers began finding their place at the Fairgrounds. For many, the return to Syracuse each October is a bit of a pilgrimage, a chance to reconnect and enjoy a week with friends and fast cars. For others, there’s a curiosity about Super DIRT Week, it’s something they’ve heard about but will see for the first time themselves this week.

More than 60 Super DIRTcar Series Big-Blocks and 50 DIRTcar 358-Modifieds have already gone through inspection by DIRTcar officials. The cars will continue to roll into the “Moody Mile” over the next couple of days, setting the stage for Sunday’s Super DIRTcar Series SEF Small Engine Fuel 200 Presented by Ferris & Snapper as well as Saturday’s Nationwide Insurance 150 for DIRTcar 358-Modifieds. The DIRTcar Sportsman Modified 30 is an intense race on Saturday afternoon as is the Sunday DIRTcar Pro Stock 25 Presented by Bacc-Off.

When Wednesday afternoon’s practice sessions were canceled so track crews could spend more time preparing the “Moody Mile” for action, DIRTcar officials added a second practice session to Thursday afternoon’s schedule. The on-track activity begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday and continues throughout the day, interrupted only at noon by the annual Media Day festivities, which include Wayne Mahar, the CNY Central Chief Meteorologist on NBC Channel 3. Mahar will also bring his popular “Wayne’s Weather Deck” segment to Friday Night Lights racing at the Fairgrounds.
As part of the 40th anniversary celebrations, 16 of the former Super DIRT Week main event champions will be in attendance to participate in everything from media day to a special Saturday autograph session to the opening ceremonies on Sunday.
In events around Central New York that run in conjunction with Super DIRT Week, the 358-Modifieds and the World of Outlaws Late Model Series at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park.
On Saturday, Jason Meyers, Steve Kinser, Donny Schatz and the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series will invade Rolling Wheels Raceway with the DIRTcar Big-Block Modified “Win & You’re In” Syracuse qualifier.
