Friesen Tops Pole Position Raceway Event Featuring Super DIRTcar Series Stars vs. Central New York Media Celebrities
NAPA’s Aaron Smith wins trophy for highest finishing media celeb
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sept. 22, 2015 – It was the third annual Pole Position Raceway NAPA Super DIRT Week Challenge and in victory lane was no stranger to the Syracuse Classic, three-time winner Stewart Friesen. More than 20 media and sponsor representatives turned out Tuesday afternoon to take on three of best to ever wheel a big block modified in front of many fans that turned out in Destiny USA.
The Sprakers, NY star led all 14 laps to hold something that has been very familiar to him in 2015…the checkered flag. For Smith, he finished in second ahead of Matt Sheppard which found him holding the trophy for being the highest finishing non-driver, Dirt Track Digest/Empire Super Sprints Dean Reynolds was fourth with Larry Wight rounding out the top five.
“It feels good to finally win one of these challenges, it’s definitely different to make left and right hand turns.” Noted Friesen. “The Kart got better as laps went on and you got heat in the tires. Starting on the pole also helped. It was fun and glad to be here to help kick off Super DIRT Week.”
The event was stopped one time when Reynolds made contact trying to pass Sheppard and then he took a hard hit from 95X’s Rick Raner. Once restarted, Friesen was uncontested right to the finish.
For Smith, it was a special treat, he is the man behind the NAPA sponsorship for DIRT Week and he took advantage of his past racing experience. “I was hoping I could give Stew a run but shows how good these guys are.” He continued, “We are just so proud to be a part of such a great event and this makes it a little more fun.”
Challenge Notes: World Racing Group CEO Brian Carter addressed the gathering before the racing went on by simply saying, “There will be a Super DIRT Week in 2016 here in Central, NY.” He did mention that there is a Plan A,B and even C in place but was very optimistic about the State’s involvement… Friesen will be looking for another Syracuse victory but what is making the final event special to him is his small block ride being lettered in memory of Alex Friesen…Matt Sheppard is also doing a retro paint scheme which will be numbered #999 which his dad Stu carried to many victories…Larry Wight mentioned that he will be competing on both big and small block competition.
