French-Canadian Mathieu Desjardins Tops Sportsman-Modified Qualifying In First NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week Appearance

SYRACUSE, NY – Oct. 5, 2012 – By Kevin Kovac/DIRTcar Racing P.R. – Mathieu Desjardins of Sorel-Tracy, Que., didn’t take long to make a big impression during NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week XLI at the New York State Fairgrounds.

The 26-year-old French-Canadian shocked the Sportsman-Modified field during Friday afternoon’s qualifying session, turning a lap of 34.738 seconds to set fast time for the division’s 30-lap Championship event on Saturday.

“I’ve been coming to Syracuse since I was a kid,” the French-speaking Desjardins said through a translator (Canadian track announcer Brian Mulligan). “This is my first time here as a competitor and it can’t be any better than this.”

A three-night-a-week DIRTcar Sportsman-Modified regular in Quebec at Autodrome Granby, Autodrome Drummond and RPM Speedway, Desjardins will start from the pole position in Saturday’s headline event. The top 24 qualifiers in Friday’s time trials locked themselves into the 30-mile battle with the remainder of the starting field determined from the results of two Non-Qualifiers’ races on Saturday.

Cody McPherson of St. Catharines, Ont., who won DIRTcar Sportsman-Modified championships this season at Ontario’s Merrittville and Humberstone speedways, timed second-fastest at 34.988 seconds. Gary Lindburg of Ridgeway, Ont., was third-fastest (35.299), followed by Josh VanBrocklin of Watertown, N.Y. (35.348) and James Henry of Niagara Falls, N.Y. (35.354).
