T-Mac Back at CCFS

6:20 p.m. – The last time Tim McCreadie stepped in his No. 4 small block was this time last year, for the Super DIRT Week satellite event at Cayuga County Fair Speedway. However, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series regular is ready for the change.

It woudl make it a lot harder if we had different people,” McCreadie said of his crew and car owner. “It makes it easier for me because the car’s already good, it’s just a matter of me jumping in and trying to get focused on what makes me feel comfortable.”

Last year, McCreadie started 21st and finished sixth.

“We were decent in the feature, just it’s hard to start behind like that so hopefully we’ll do better in the qualifiers tonight,” McCreadie said.

Wheeling in Weedsport

5:35 p.m. – After a year-long hiatus, drivers and fans return to the Cayuga County Fair Speedway in Weedsport, N. Y., for the NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week Kickoff presented by FX Caprara. Super DIRTcar Series point leader Matt Sheppard and runner-up Jimmy Phelps brought their small blocks out to the 3/8-mile track, hoping for a successful run to cap off move-in day.

“It should be a good night. Hopefully the track turns out good. It looks smooth. Hopefully we have a good night,” Sheppard said. “I grew up running here, so it brings back a lot of memories.”

“It’s good to be back,” Phelps said. “It’s a small, racey track. It’s conducive to a lot of passing, and if the car’s good you can get to the front. It’s been a while since we’ve been here, so it’s good to be back.”

Visiting the ‘Cuse

4:35 p.m. – With the World of Outlaws Late Model Series racing tomorrow night at Rolling Wheels Raceway Park, tour rookie Kent Robinson of Bloomington, Ind., decided to tow in a day early and check out the action at the New York State Fairgrounds. The 25-year-old and his crewmen were seen hanging out in the pit area with some familiar faces – the Sweeteners Plus team that also travels the WoO LMS.

Robinson, who has seen mile-track dirt racing at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, was disappointed to miss out on witnessing Happy Hour practice today.

“I just wanted to see them out there,” Robinson said of the big-block Modifieds. “I’ve always been interested in these things, but I’ve only seen them run at Volusia and Charlotte.

“They’re real impressive cars. McCreadie’s car is like a work of art – the body work is just so neat.”

T-Mac’s fresh iron

4 p.m. – Tim McCreadie is in unfamiliar territory this week at Syracuse. For the first time since he joined the Sweeteners Plus team a decade ago, he’s entered the VP Small Engine Fuels 200 in a brand-new big-block Modified.

The World of Outlaws Late Model Series regular has a new Bicknell machine ready for action – which means the proven but certainly battle-tested car he first ran here in 2005 and returned to for his most recent ‘Cuse attempts has finally been retired.

According to McCreadie’s Sweeteners Plus teammate Vic Coffey, there’s a lot of Syracuse history in that old Bicknell car. It began life in ’04 as a short-track mount for Coffey, but he ran it “maybe a half-dozen times” before it was converted to big-track duty and driven by McCreadie in the ’05 VP Small Engine Fuels 200 (he finished 23rd). McCreadie missed the next three Super DIRT Weeks (in ’06 there was a conflicting WoO LMS event, in ’07 he was concentrating on NASCAR Nationwide Series action and in ’08 he did not make an assault on Syracuse), but his car was run at Syracuse by Coffey in both ’07 (he won the VP Small Engine Fuels 200) and ’08 (he finished 45th). McCreadie returned to the seat of the Modified in ’09 and scored a career-best second-place finish in the 200, and he’s placed 30th (’10) and 14th (’11) in his last two starts.

The vintage car took a beating the last two years, however. In 2010 McCreadie folded its nose when he hit a turn-one hole on qualifying day and major repairs had to be exacted so he could run it in the 200, and last year he slammed the turn-one wall during a Friday-night heat race to necessitate even more serious frame work.

“It definitely was time to stop running that car,” bottom-lined Coffey, who still has the machine sitting in the Sweeteners Plus shop. In fact, he said he has plans for the car.

“I still have the body I had on the car when I won (the 200 in ’07),” said Coffey, “so I think I might put it back on hang it from the rafters in the shop. I’ve always wanted to do that with a car.”

Getting checked

2:05 p.m. – On Tuesday, 112 cars rolled through the early inspection, with dozens more going through tech today. A huge field is expected to compete this week in each division. Entry lists will be updated each day and can be viewed by clicking this link.

Too wet

1:45 p.m. – Happy Hour practice, which was scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., has been canceled for today. With a busy week of action on the Moody Mile and rain last night, track crews decided not to put cars on the surface this afternoon.

Note that tonight’s action at Cayuga County Fair Speedway in Weedsport, N.Y., IS ON, featuring DIRTcar 358-Modifieds and DIRTcar Sportsman Modifieds.
