From Steel to Clay – Oswego Speedway Transforms Ahead of NAPA Super DIRT Week XLVIII

OSWEGO, NY – The clay has been laid down on Oswego Speedway’s pavement. The finishing touches are being added to the grounds, from new roads in the campgrounds to new ways of making “Racing’s Biggest Party” even bigger. On Sunday the gates will open to campers for the 48th running of NAPA Auto Parts Super DIRT Week, the biggest annual dirt racing event in New York.

Last year’s Feature races were some of the most memorable in NAPA Super DIRT Week history. All four races came down to the final laps and featured incredible race-winning passes. With the same dirt, the same crew believes it will only race better.

The Billy Whittaker Cars 200 came down to two of the best Big Block Modified drivers in the world last season. Lightning Larry Wight went to the top, mere inches from the steel Oswego walls, to pass NASCAR Gander Mountain Truck Series Championship contender Stewart Friesen for the $50,000 win, the first NAPA Super DIRT Week victory of Wight’s career.

Meanwhile, the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds also put on an exceptional show when Queensland, Australia native Peter Britten soared to Victory Lane in a rare appearance in the division. The win was good for a $20,000 payday. Britten passed 21 cars (in the No. 21A) in the final 50 laps to pick up the checkered flag. Only a smooth, multi-lane racing surface can facilitate that type of action.

The Chevy Performance 75 for the DIRTcar Sportsman Modified Series produced an unforgettable finish with four cars vying for the win late in the race. Shane Pecore used lapped traffic to dip, duck, and dodge his way to Victory Lane over Robert Bublak, Adam McAuliffe, and Connor Cleveland.

Last but not least, the fan-favorite full-fender frenzy of the Wilkins Pro Stock 50 put on yet another incredible show. C.D. Beauchamp brought the crowd to its feet with a drag race to the finish line, beating Chuck Dumblewski by a nose.

This type of racing doesn’t happen by accident. It all comes down to the expert preparation by the DIRTcar Racing track crews. They are the same team that prepares The Dirt Track at Charlotte for the Can-Am World Finals, they laid the dirt down in Nashville for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars, and have honed their skills right here in Central New York for many years.
